It doesn't matter whether you're an international traveller or simply from Britain; those who haven't visited the town of Shrewsbury have plenty to enjoy. This article takes a look at some of the best things to do in Shrewsbury, allowing you to plan your visit. Let's begin.
Shrewsbury is a historic town located in Shropshire, next to the River Severn. Notably, one of the best things about Shrewsbury is its location and transportation options. It’s only a 1-hour drive to Birmingham thanks to the motorway network, or a short drive in the opposite direction will take you to the country of Wales, as Shrewsbury is only 9 miles east of the Welsh border.
The town boasts plenty of medieval heritage, primarily due to the wool trade, which was a massive commercial outlet for the area. The River Severn served as a major trading route back in 800 AD.
Shrewsbury isn’t just about transportation options and history; you’ll also find a variety of activities to enjoy while visiting. This article explores what's available.
Probably the most iconic building in Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Castle was originally built around 1067 to protect the town from invasion.
Shrewsbury Castle is definitely worthy of a visit.
Tip: Near the entrance, you’ll find steps that lead to an amazing birds-eye view of the castle and the surrounding areas of Shrewsbury.
Certainly not the most attractive building in Shrewsbury, Theatre Severn has plenty to offer.
If you enjoy classical, drama, opera, musicals, comedy, and more, then check out what’s on and consider visiting.
The River Severn, which flows through Shrewsbury, is the UK's largest river, meandering for approximately 220 miles.
You can find more information about fishing on the River Severn here. Other activities available include taking a boat tour and hiring a canoe.
Tip: Don't go swimming in the River Severn. It takes many people's lives due to unpredictable undercurrents. On a hot day, it can be tempting, but it's best to stay safe.
If you love history, the Music Hall Museum should be on your list of places to visit.
Like most UK towns, Shrewsbury is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, pubs, clubs, and hotels.
The only downside is that the town is plagued with pigeons.
Shrewsbury also has a bingo hall located at Castle Gates, Shrewsbury SY1 2AG. It's highly popular among older adults, but don’t be surprised to find a few younger people enjoying the experience. A good friend of mine, who is in his mid-20s, absolutely loves it.
If you're looking for a place to relax and take a breather, then The Dingle is the perfect spot for you to visit.
The Dingle isn’t your average garden; it offers an environment that you won’t easily find elsewhere. Many benches are scattered around the paths, allowing you to sit and enjoy a packed lunch, read a book, meditate, or simply relax.
The vibrant mix of colours surrounds a pond with fountains, yet accessing the garden is through a small gate that isn’t obviously marked. Once located, however, it's more than worth enjoying.
Also located at The Quarry is the Shrewsbury Flower Show, a yearly event that attracts over 50,000 visitors.
Once you've explored all of Shrewsbury's attractions, you may want to head to the train station.
As you can see, there are many things to do in Shrewsbury, making it a great destination to plan your visit. Finally, as a note, I'll be continuing to update this article with photos and other details.
